The current solution is to just lazily scale back the number of players. Take any of the elite specs and they have much heavier (read more particles) animations than any of the core specs - which means it takes fewer of them to have performance issues. Each new piece of content is more spectacular than the last, expansions being the prime example of this. The engine is the bottleneck for the game's future, I would even put this above the content drought. They have the manpower to commit to this if they wanted, or they could have hired more people and upskilled them at any point over the games life and tasked them with upgrading the engine. I wish people would stop acting like its a 3 man development team. Why doesn't ANet have that? They're not a small indie company, they're the creators of one of the biggest western MMOs.
